17th World Champion
Ding Liren became the 17th World Chess Champion after beating GM Ian Neponmiatchtchi in the World Chess Championship 2023. Ding won this match in a rapid tie-break in game 4.
He achieved this at the age of 30.
First Chinese to cross 2800
Ding became the first Chinese chess player to cross the 2800 rating. Many chess players crossed the 2800 rating before him, including GM Magnus Carlsen, GM Vishy Anand, GM Garry Kasparov, GM Hikaru Nakamura, etc.
100 Games without any loss
Ding’s 100-game streak is very much famous in itself. He hasn’t lost a single chess game in classical chess in 100 games. This streak was the longest in chess history at the top level until world champion Magnus Carlsen did it in 2019. In chess, not losing a chess game in 100 games is extremely difficult.

No tournaments during covid
Because of covid 19, Ding Liren is not able to play chess tournaments in Europe. The main reason is restrictions by Western countries on China.
Because of this, he suffered a huge time loss in his career. Even though he played various chess events online, the timing was very weird for him. For example, he played one tournament at midnight as many of the players were from Europe, and the organizers adjusted the time according to them.
Unique selection to Candidates 2023
Ding was not supposed to play Candidates 2023. The main candidate was GM Sergey Karjakin. Due to his opinions on the case between Russia and Ukraine, Sergey got banned for a few months from competitive chess, and hence, FIDE decided to take 2nd best chess player according to rating. That’s how Ding got a spot in the Candidates 2023.

Ding won a Chinese chess championship in 2009, 2011, and 2012. China is one of the strongest chess nations, and winning three times (Almost in a row) is a huge thing for a chess player.
