Published By – Everyman chess

What to Expect –

Endgame strategy is one of the best classics. This book was published in the Russian language in 1981. (yes, around 40 years back!) The first English edition was published in 1985 by everyman chess. This book is an attempt to study and systemize certain basic practical principles of the playing of chess endings. This book contains an interesting selection of endings along with classic examples. The author aims in the first instance to explain the course of the struggle, penetrate into the psychology of the players’ actions and to focus readers’ attention.

What is the uniqueness of this book –

This book focuses on complex endgame with many pieces. Positions are also selected carefully. The author covered many topics from pawns to queens. This book also focuses on the problem of exchanges, how to use two bishops, 3 vs 2 pawn structure, etc. It was very difficult to produce any chess book in 1981 but Shereshevsky was the one who published many books at that time.

For whom will this book suit the best?

This book is recommended for those who know basic principles and types of core endgame. This book can be studied from beginner to master and for beginner, those who played 6-8 classical tournaments can check this book.

What did I like about this book?

I find chapter names quite interesting such as, Do not hurry, Principle of two weaknesses, etc. Because every time before we purchase any book, we read the preface and index. I also like the chapter introduction very much. I have completed this book almost 2 times. According to me, this book can be studied repetitively to enjoy the beauty of chess.

Book review – Opening simulator kings Indian defence

Author Of Book – Esben Lund and Andreas Skytte Hagen.

Publishing Date – 31st July 2019

Published By – Quality Chess

When I first saw the book name, I thought this book is about full opening theory similar like Grandmaster Repertoire series but it is completely different. This book is mainly aiming at positions. It is the first book ever that give problems for solving only for this particular opening. Andreas idea about this book was to solve a vast number of exercises in the kings Indian defence and then repeat this exact same exercise over and over again. The title of the book- opening simulator was coined by Andreas and it sums up the concept very well, the training you get from studying this book is close to a practical game as a book can get.

Content of this book

In the first half section of this book, the author explained kings Indian defence variations. Then in the last half of the book total of 400 puzzles and their solutions are given. Puzzles are categorized as level 1 to level 5. Level 1 is easiest and level 5 is difficult.

What to expect?

As I said in the first paragraph this is a first book aiming for particular opening puzzles. If you complete this book by solving all 400 positions, you will improve your understanding, tactical skills very much. The author has covered almost all variation puzzles. Level 1 and level 2 is comparatively easy. Level 3 and 4 are moderately difficult but level 5 is insane.

How to use this book during tournaments?

The author has explained this in the book, here I will explain briefly about this. If you expect kings Indian defence, spend a 15 -20 minute before the game solving exercises from this book. Only choose exercises from level 1 and level 2. When you finish these exercises, start again with 1st problem, i.e. you have to solve only the first 2 levels like woodpecker method.

The uniqueness about this book

This book is not focused very much on opening theory. It’s a new approach to prepare the opening. This book has pretty interesting positions. The first part i.e. opening theory is not too deep and If anyone wants to just understand the basic structure of this opening then its perfect book to him.

Who can read this book?

This book is fully about kings Indian defence. Those who love to play can read this book. Those who want some serious improvement in kings Indian defence should defiantly purchase this book. If we took rating into consideration then it is perfect from anyone who wants to learn the basics of this opening to professional level players also.

What did I like about this book?

Kings Indian defence is my personal favourite opening. I was playing Hoogeveen chess festival at Netherland in 2019, I purchased this book. I got decent knowledge from this book. Though I have played kings Indian defence since last 8-10 years this book is not very much effective for me. But overall I liked the selection of problems by authors.

My System written by Aron Nimzowitsch is one of the “must study” books in chess literature. This book is classified under ‘Chess classics’ category by Quality Chess. The book should be studied in the earlier stages of learning chess. This book was first published in the German language in 1925. But there was no English translation available. The first English translation was in the year 2005 which had alterations by the translators. So to give audience perfect meaning of what the author meant, Quality Chess published this book in 2007.

What To Expect?

The book covers basic elements like checkmate, notation etc. It also has key topics like a rook on the seventh rank, quality of pieces, prophylaxis, endgame. Although at a few points I did feel that the writer went astrey but I feel he wanted to make a point by being creative.

What Is A Unique Thing In This Book?

The most unique fact I felt about this book is that it is written in 1925. The material is of such high quality that 95 years have passed and still all the concepts are relatable! Another mind-boggling fact is the author’s vision of prophylaxis. He knew the importance of prophylaxis long back.

As I mentioned earlier, this book has basic stuff and also high-level stuff. So you can learn accordingly. Even a newcomer to chess can start with this book.

What Did I Like?

When I was going through the contents (index) page, that itself made me fall in love with this book. The author has taken significant effort to classify a lot of topics and include sub-topics accordingly. He has also provided key examples and also the crucial points or tips are highlighted.  Also, the variety of topics covered gives the desire to study the book again.

In this book, you will find some special chapters such as quantity beats quality, kill zone, etc. The uniqueness is Jacob explained all attacking concepts very well. You will find almost all unique positions that you will not find in any other book. Jacob took a lot of effort to select these positions and that’s why this book is one of the bestsellers in the world.you should must-read small articles in this book attacking theory in 60 seconds. Who can read

This book is quite a high level and as per my opinion, this book is perfect for players who are above 2000 rating. Others also can solve this book but the puzzles are really very tough. Basically in one book author told that that whole grandmaster preparation series is dedicated to players who are 2300 above.

What did I like?

This book is very structured. Puzzles are divided properly into chapters. The explanation given by Jacob is not very long but it’s perfect. I like the way the author arranged puzzles. The first 6 puzzles of each chapter are quite easy and gradually increase the difficulty level of puzzles. As I mentioned in the previous article, I liked the page quality of quality chess books. This book is defiantly worth buying.
